India’s proud; Mr. Jaspal Rana was born on June 28, 1976. He hails from District Dehradun (Jaunsar Bawar area) Near Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. He represented India many times, mostly in the 25 m Centre Fire Pistol category. He made our country proud many times by achieving many medals in Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and many more. Currently, Rana coaches at the Jaspal Rana Institute of Education and Technology in Dehradun.

1. Gold Medal in the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, Japan 2. Gold medal in Men’s 25m Centre Fire Pistol (Pairs) at the 2006 Commonwealth Games with Samaresh Jung. 3. Gold Medals in 25m Center Fire Pistol and 25m Standard Pistol at the 2006 Asian Games. While winning the 25 m Center Fire Pistol event, Rana rivalled the world record by accumulating 590 points. At an early age of 18 years, Rana achieved Arjun Award in 1994 which is the second highest award for achievements in sports by the Government of India 1994. Also, when he was at 21, he was awarded with Padma Shri and National Citizen Award by Mother Teresa.
A mountaineer by profession, Chandraprabha Aitwal was born on 24th December 1941 in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, India. She is the recipient of 2009 Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award from Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for Life Time Achievement. She has scaled many peaks like Nanda Devi, Kanchanjunga,Trishuli and Mt. Jaonli. She was also a part of IMF sponsored Mt. Everest campaign. At the age of 68 years, in the Garhwal Himalayas, Mount Srikantha was summited by her for the second time of her career. It was an expedition of all women IMF. She has received the India’s one of the highest awards, Padma Shri and Arjuna Award.
A leading mountaineer and a personnel of Military, Maj. Harsh Vardhan Bahuguna was born on 18th April, 1939 in Uttarakhand. High Altitude Warfare School, Gulmarg appointed him as the instructor of Skiing and Mountaineering. Under his instructions, school had climbed many peaks successfully. He received the Padma Shri award in the year 1972.

Born on 10th September, 1945 in Village Jyoli, Almora district, Utarakhand, Girish Tiwari, popularly known as Girda, was a poet and a scriptwriter. He wrote the plays Nagare Khamosh Hain and Dhanush Yagya and directed many plays. Among his published composition, Kavita Ke Ankhar, Shikharaon Ke Swar and Rang Daridio Alwelin have become very popular. He died on 22nd August 2010. He took actively part with the famous “Chipko Movement” and “Uttarakhand Andolan”.
Amongst the women writers of Uttarakhand, Gaura Pant (Shivani) clamps a prominent place. She was born on 17.10.1923 in Rajkot, Gujarat to a Kumauni family. Her first story was published in 1935 in the Hindi children’s magazine Natkhat. Her well known works include Chaudah Phere, Kainza,Vish Kanya, and Bhairavi. She died on March, 2003.
Manglesh Dabral is born in Tehri, Uttarakhand, India on 16th May 1948. He is an outstanding Indian hindi poet. He did his education from Dehradun. He is the recipient of Sahitya Academy Award by Sahitya Academy. His poetry works include Pahaar Pal Laltein, Kavi Ka Akeylapan, Gharr Ka Raasta, Hum Jo Dekhtey Hain, Ek Bar Lova, Lekhak ki Roi etc. His poetries have been translated into all major Indian and foreign languages, like Russian, Bulgarian, Dutch, Spanish, German, Italian, Polish and French.
Born in village Malkoti of Rudraprayag district, on 20th August 1919, Chandra Kunwar Bartwal was a gleaming star in the span of Hindi literature, which astonished with the virtuosity of his poetic creativity. Sadly, he died at a very young age of 28, on 14.09.1947. In his short life, he had a phenomenal output in multiple fields of Hindi literature: poetry, essay, short story, one-act play etc. His poetry has a distinguishing expressive quality, especially the lyrics of ‘Kafa Paku’ won lot of perilous acclaim.
The renowned historian, and honoured by several organisations and State Govermemnt, Shiv Prasad Dabral was born on 12.11.1912 in Pauri Garhwal district. He wrote the monumental history of Uttarakhand in 18 volumes, 9 plays, 2 collections of poetry, and several edited volumes in Hindi and Garhwali. His Uttarakhand ka Itihaas (History of Uttarakhand) is extensively used by scholars. His house in Dugadda was absolute treasure house of thousands of books, rare manuscripts, coins and other artifacts. He died on 24th November, 1999.
Dr-Pitambar-Dutt-Barthwal The first man who had been honoured with a D Litt (Doctor of Literature) Degree in Hindi, Dr. Pitambar Dutt Barthwal was born in village Pali near Lansdowne in Pauri Garhwal district on 13th December, 1901. Dr. Barthwal was a stupendous scholar and writer of Hindi.
Dr Barthwal wrote a number of books in different types and on various topics of cultural interest, literary and edited several volumes. His major periodicals are Gadya Saurabh, Goswami Tulsi Das, Gorakhbani, Haridas Ki Sakhi. He expired on 24.07.1944.
Born on 20.05.1900, in the town of Kausani in Bageshwar district, Sumitranandan Pant is one of the most famous modern poets of Hindi literature. Sumitranandan Pant established the chhayavadi format of Hindi poetry.
When he was born, his mother expired six hours later the boy was born and his father gave the child away to Gusain Baba who was a Shiv devotee. He named him Gusam Dutt. He was therefore known as Gusain, in Kausani but he did not like his name, therefore, he gave himself a new name ‘Sumitranandan Pant’. He composed 28 published works which include poetry, verse plays and essays. Major works are Chinti, Chidambara, Veena, Pallav, Granthi, Gunjan, Lokayatan, Pallavini, Madhu Jwala, Manasi, Vaani, Yug Path, Satyakaam, Anguthita, Gramya, Tarapath, Mukti Yagnya, Yugant and Swachchand. The most popular poetry is Veena. He received the Gyanpeeh award for his poem Chidambara, for which he is best known.
The recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1979, a very well known theatre personality, Mr. Brij Mohan Shah (famously known as B. M. Shah) was born on Nainital, Uttarakhand, India in the year 1933. He was a playwright and theatre director. During the period of 1982-1984, he became the director of National School of Drama. His memorable plays were Hayavadana, Ghasiram Kotwal, Tughlaq, Do Kashtiyon Ke Sawar and the most noted play was Trishanku. Not only this, for the Bhartendu Natya Academy, Lucknow and shri Ram Centre of Performing Arts, he directed plays. Also, before becoming the director of NSD, he taught Sanskrit in St. Columba’s School, Delhi for many years. He acted in hindi films also namely Yeh Woh Manzil Toh Nahi and Dil Se… along with a documentary film, The Post Master. He was died on 5th June 1998. An Award namely, “B.M. Shah Award” was established by UP Sangeet Natak Academy which gives felicitate the persons for their outstanding contribution in the field of theatre. Not only this, Bharat Natya Academy made their Gomti Nagar auditorium’s name as B.M.Shah Auditorium, Luckow.
A pioneer theatre personality, Mr. Mohan Upreti was born in Almora, Uttarakhand, India in the year 1928. His forte is playwright, music composing and folk music. He is considered for his massive involvement of making Kumaoni folk music popular. His very-very popular song is “Bedu Pako Bara Masa”, which is an evocative of Uttarakhand music. This song is so popular that this is still a very demanding song played in Kumaoni / Garhwali weddings or functions. It is also the marching song of the Kumaon Regiment. In the years 1940-50, Upretiji trekked to Uttarakhand along with Mr. B. M. Shah for collecting the evaporated folk songs and traditions to remain them safe. He had established cultural institutions namely Parwatiya Kala Kendra (Delhi) etc. He was also in the faculty of National School of Drama, Delhi for so many years. One of his famous plays, is “Indra – Sabha” along with “Rajula Malushahi”, “Nanda Devi Jagar” etc. For many years, he worked in traditional Ram-Leela plays to bring it to the metropolitan audience. He died in New Delhi in the year 1997. In 1980s, he gave music to multiple television productions which also consist of a cycle of “Ek Tha Rusty” (Ruskin Bond’s stories). In that project he gave a noticeable Kumaoni folk touch. Upretiji is still so popular, that every year, his institution (Parvatiya Kala Kendra) presents a new play on his birth anniversary. Ad Guru Prasoon Joshi included Upretiji’s creation (Bedu Pako Bara Masa) music in Coca Cola advertisement.
Born on 14th October 1931 in Barechhina, Almora, Uttarakhand, India, Mr. Shailesh Matiyani is a famous writer, essayist and a poet. His original name is Ramesh Singh Matiyani ‘Shailesh’. In the year 1959, his first novel was published (Borivilli Se Boribander tak) and after that, he wrote various short stories, essays and novels. He was the editor of Janpaksh and Vikalp publications for many years. He was the recipient of Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan Award in the year 2000. He died in Delhi on 24th April 2001. An award was announced by the Madhya Pradesh Government in his name (Shailesh Matiyani Smriti Katha Puraskar).
A historian and researcher who had done significant works and wrote many books, was born in 1904. He very well researched about the Katyuri and Chand dynasties. His publication works are the source material of history of Kumaun, Kurmachal Gauravgatha. He also re-issued version of Pandit Shivanand’s book Kalyan Chandroda.
A renowned hindi screenwriter, writer and journalist, Manohar Shyam Joshi was born on 09.08.1933 to a Kumauni Brahman family from Almora, Uttarakhand. He won Sahitya Academy Award for his famous novel Kyap. He is the writer of India’s first television daily soap, Hum Log, Mungeri Lal ke Hasin Sapney, Hamrahi, Kakaji Kahin, Zameen Aasman, Buniyaad and Gatha. In fact, he is called the Parent of Indian Soap Operas.

India’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna winner, Pt. Gobind Ballabh Pant was born in Khoont, Almora, Uttarakhand, India on 10th September, 1887. He was the recipient of “Proud Past Alumni” from “Allahabad University Alumni Association”. By profession, he was a lawyer. He was an expert Indian Freedom Fighter and politician who was the main figure in the movement for India’s independence alongside Mahatma Gandhi and Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru. Later he became an essential figure in the Indian Government after the independence. After his name there are several hospitals, foundations and educational institutions and a city and airport (Pantnagar) also established. In front of the Indian Parliament in Delhi, there is a notorious statue stands gracefully. He died on 7th March 1961.

The most reputed physicist of India, Professor Krishna Joshi was born in village Anarpa of Kumaun region on 6th June, 1935. In the year 1962, Prof. Krishna Joshi has received his Ph D in Physics from Allahabad University. His vast areas of interest are in theory of Condensed Matter and Collision Processes. He has superintended the Ph D theses of 20 scholars and has printed more than 190 research papers. In Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, he has worked as a professor during 1967 till 1986.
From 1986 till 1991, he became the Director of National Physical Laboratory. In the year 1991, he had become the Director General of the Indian Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. Prof. Joshi has received the glaring Padmashri and Padma Bhushan in 1991 and 2003 respectively.
One of the eminent Indian Scientists, Dr. Ghananand Pandey was born on Ranikhet town, Almora district, Uttarakhand, India on 1st January 1902. In the year 1925, he got his BE degree (Civil Engineering) from Thomson College of Civil Engineering, Roorkee which is now called the IIT Roorkee. During the period from 1954 to 1957, he became the Railway Board Chairman and Secretary of Ministry of Railway in the Government of India. He received the prominent Padma Vibhushan in 1969.
A famous social activitist, Radha Bhatt (known as Radha Behn) was born in village Dhuraka, Almora on 16th October 1934. Radha Behn has made commendable involvement in the fields of women’s education and employment. In the year 1951, she abandoned her formal education after her intermediate and joined Laxmi Ashram in Kausani to undertake social work. During the year from 1957 to 1961, she took part actively in Bhoodan Yatra and visited numerous provinces of Uttarakhand. She actively participated in activities against alcoholism, mining, and deforestation. In the year 1992, she received Jamnalal Bajaj award for her offerings to social liberation.
Famously known as ‘Gandhi of Uttarakhand’, Indramani Badoni was born in village Akhori, Tehri, Uttarakhand, India on 24th December, 1924. As an explorer, he discovered the Khatling glacier, source of river Bhilangana. He led the non-violent ancient crusade for the establishment of Uttarakhand state. He commenced an unlimited fast until death on 2nd August, 1994, at Pauri, headquarters of Garhwal, demanding for the separate state. Unfortunately, he could not see the new state as he died on 18th August, 1999.
The second son of Sh. Hans Rawat was born on 1952, 26th or 27th July. He is married to a vibrant woman, Mata Shri Mangla Ji. He and his family have founded the Non Profit Organisation, Hans Foundation. It is a charitable trust which helps to support the different organizations who are involved in the developments in the sectors of disability, healthcare and education. The foundation was established in the year 2009. The Hans Foundation works for the areas of rural development as well as preserve of the cultural activities. Bholeji and Mata ji have helped the people by establishing two hospitals in Haridwar and Satpuli, Uttarakhand. They provide free medicines and financial help to the poor patients. During the disaster in Uttarakhand, they provide help to the victims on a large scale. Foundation also started school in the villages that are very far where the facility is not available. Not only this, they adopted 7 schools in which they are providing mid day meal along with their associate organisation “Akshay Patra” to the schools.

A very well known to almost every uttarakhandi, Mr. Narendra Singh Negi, a reputed singer was born in Pauri, Uttarakhand, India on 12th August 1949. He ascertained himself as a lyricist and a singer of Garhwali folk songs in 1970s. He represented Uttarakhand state at multiple functions by composing and singing Garhwali songs on various platforms. He has given music direction and voice in lots of superhit Garhwali movies like Chakrachal, Meri Ganga Holi Ta Maima Aali, Gharjawai, Kautheeg etc.

A renowned name in the memoirs of Kumauni and Garhwali music, Sh. Gopal Babu Goswami was born in village Chandikot, Almora, Uttarakhand, India, on 2nd February 1941. His very first song was a super hit which was for Akashwani Kailey Bajey Mooruli O baina. After that he sang so many songs and became popular. Also he was the first actor as well as singer of the first Kumaoni film “Megha Aa”.
Mina Rana is a creative singer from Uttarakhand. Ms. Rana was born in Delhi on 24th May 1975. She has sung in many Garhwali and Kumaoni music albums. Even though, she did not get any formal training of singing, she is one of the finest female singers of Uttarakhand. When she was in her high school, she got her first break for a movie, “Nauni Pichadi Nauni”. With nearly all the famous singers of Uttarakhand, Ms. Rana has shared the singing platform. The 9th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna was born on 25th April 1919 in Pauri, Uttarakhand, India. He did his schooling from Messmore Inter College, Pauri, Utarakhand. His family later shifted to Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh. He was the recipient of the “Proud Past Alumni” by Allahabad University. He was a part of Quit India movement for which he also jailed. He joined Congress Party and became the 9th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, but later he associated with Bhartiya Lok Dal. He was died on 17th March 1989 at the age of 69 years. The largest University in Uttarakhand, Hemwati Nandan Bahugana Garhwal University, is named after him.
A very well-known name in the Indian Politics, Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi was born on 5th January 1934, in Nainital, Uttarakhand India. He did his early education from different parts of Uttarakhand (Chandpur, Almora) and Bijnor (Uttar Pradesh) and graduation from Meerut College and post-graduation and PhD from Allahabad University, UP. He also received the “Proud Past Alumni” of Allahabad University. After doing his PhD, he published first of its kind a research paper (Physics) in Hindi language. He also taught Physics at Allahabad University. At a very young age, he came in contact with the RSS and developed interest in Indian politics. He became the Member of Parliament from Almora, Uttarakhand, India. He was the direct in charge of Bihar, Bengal and North-East states as the General Secretary of the BJP. He also served the nation as the Human Resource Development Minister when BJP came into the power under Shri Atal Bihari Bajpayee’s leadership. He became a three time consistent MP of Allahabad. He also won the election from Varanasi to the 15th Lok Sabha as a BJP candidate. He left his MP Varanasi seat for Mr Narendra Modi in 2014 and contested and won from Kanpur constituency.
A BJP politician, Mr Mohan Singh Bisht was born on 2nd June 1957 in Ajoli Village, Almora, Uttarakhand, India. In the year 1976, he shifted to Delhi and joined predecessor of Bhartiya Janata Party, Bhartiya Jan Sangha and became a “Swayamsevak”. He won the Vidhan Sabha elections in 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013 continuously from the Karawal Nagar constituency. In the year 2013, he was appointed as the Vice President of the Delhi unit of BJP. He is married to Ms. Lakshmi Bisht and has a son and a daughter. Also his family runs a senior secondary school (Adharshila Convent Public School) in Karawal Nagar.
7th Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, India since February 2014 (from Indian National Congress Party), Sh. Harish Rawat was born on 27th April 1948 on Mohanari, Almora, Uttarakhand, India. He is a law graduate from Lucknow University. He became the member of the 7th Lok Sabha after defeating the BJP expert, Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi from Almora constituency. Since 1980, Mr. Rawat has been the head of Congress Seva Dal’s Congress Volunteer Wing. In the year 2000, he was appointed as the President of Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee and also elected as the Rajya Sabha’s upper house member of Indian parliament.
N.-D.-TiwariAn Indian National Congress party controversial politician, Mr. Narayan Dutt Tiwari was born in village Baluti, Nainital, Uttarakhand, India on 18th October 1925. His father was a forest department officer. He had done his schooling from various parts of Uttarakhand and UP. He has been in politics even before the India’s independence. He wrote Anti-British brochures opposing the British policies which were imperial, because of which he had been sent behind the bars, Nainital. After his releasing from the prison, he took admission in Allahabad University for post-graduation (M.A.) and topped the university in Political Science. He completed his LLB from the University and was the President of Students’ Union, Allahabad University. After India’s independence, he was elected and become the MLA for the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Nainital constituency. In the year 1963, he attached to the Indian National Congress party and became MLA from Kashipur constituency in 1965. Not only this, he was the first President of Indian Youth Congress during the years 1969-1971. Later, he became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for three times and then Chief Minister to the Uttarakhand state. Also he was appointed as Governor of Andhra Pradesh. He married in 1954 to Sushila Tiwari and again married to Dr. Ujjwala Tiwari who is the mother of his biological son (Rohit Shekhar Tiwari).
B.-C.-KhanduriA prior Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Major General (Retd.) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri (A politician of BJP) was born on 1st October 1934 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. His father was a journalist and mother was a social activist. He is married to Ms. Aruna Khanduri and has a son and a daughter. He is a B.Sc., BE and MIE (India) and also done a postgraduation in Defence Management. He served in Indian Army for about 36 years (from 1954 till 1990). His positions in Indian Army were Commander of Regiment (in 1971 Indo-Pak war), Chief Engineer in Army, Commander of an Engineering Brigade, Additional Military Secretary and Addl. Director General in the Engineer-in-Chief’s division. He is the recipient of Ati Vishishtha Seva Medal from the Hon’ble President of India. As a Major General, he retired from prestigious Indian Army. He was firstly designated to Lok Sabha from Uttarakhand (Minister of State of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways). During his tenure he executed BJP’s honorable Nighnal Highway Development Projects with high speed and efficiency. He also embodied Departments of (i) Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, and (ii) Law and Company Affairs and was the convener of the Subcommittee on Personnel Policy of Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMFs) under different levels. He had overseen Chandra Ballabh Trust’s (an Educational rust in garhwal) activities and associated with several organizatios like Purva Sainik Seva Parishad (UP), Parvatiya Sanskriti Parishad, Dehradun, Govind Ballabh Pant Himalya Environment and Development Committee, Wild Life Society of India etc.
