Kasar Devi is a village near Almora. It is known for a temple dedicated to Kasar Devi, after whom the place is also named which is situated on Kashyap Hills at a height of approx. 2116 m. Swami Vivekananda visited and meditated at Kasar Devi and has mentioned his experience in his diaries. The temple hosts the annual “Kasar Devi Fair” on Kartik Poornima (November-December).
It is believed that this ancient temple was built in the second century. During 1890s, Swami Vivekananda visited here, also so many people from west also visited here like Sunyata Baba (Alfred Soresen) and Anagarika Govinda (Lama). In the later years, the area became a part of Hippie track. During the 1960s and 1970s the area was visited by many out of the border personalities like Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, writer D. H. Lawrens, George Harrison and Western Buddhist Robert Thurman etc.
