Maya Devi Temple is a temple of goddess Maya in the holy city of Haridwar. According to the beliefs, the heart and navel of deity Sati fell in the region where the temple stands today and thus it is also known as “Sakti Peetha”.
Goddess Maya is having three heads and four-arms and is believed to be an incarnation of Shakti . The temple is a Siddh Peetha where desires get fulfilled. It is one of three such Peethas which are situated at Haridwar, the other two Chandi Devi Temple and Mansa Devi Temple.
According to the mythology, Devi Sati set herself into the fire after feeling humiliated when her father King Daksha insulted Lord Shiva (her husband). When Lord Shiva learnt about the incidence, he was filled with the wrath and took her burnt body and toured the whole universe. During his tour, the parts of Sati fell down at any places. The naval and the heart of Devi Sati fell down at this place where the temple of Maya Devi situated.
The inner temple consists of statues (murties) of deities Maya in the centre, Kali on the left side, Kamakhya on the right side. There are also two other goddesses who are also appearance of Shakti, present in the inside shrine. The devotees from all over the world visit Haridwar to go to the shrine to seek blessings of Maa Maya Devi. The temple completes itself the trio with two other temples, namely Mansa Devi Temple and Chandi Devi Temple which is famously known as the Siddhapeeth Triangles of Haridwar.
The temple is located at the east of Har ki Pauri and is one can easily reach there by buses and auto rickshaws. The distance of the temple from Haridwar is just 4 km and from Rishikesh it is just 30 kms away. One can reach there by air also till Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun which is 25 km far. Motor-able roads are easily accessible till the temple.
